Objective & Scope
Objective: To ensure clarity in the practice of Ethical values in Laboratory Medicine.
Scope: Laboratory staff.
Responsibility: Laboratory Director and all the staff employed under the laboratory.
Core Principles
Laboratory offers its services keeping the patient's welfare as its paramount interest. It is the responsibility of all professionals working in the laboratory to practice the following four principles derived from the Declaration of Geneva (Hippocratic Oath):
- Autonomy: The right of patients to make decisions on their own behalf, presupposing informed consent or knowledge about their condition.
- Beneficence: The duty or obligation to act in the best interests of the patient.
- Non-maleficence: The duty or obligation to avoid harm to the patient.
- Justice: Embodies concepts of fairness and giving what is rightfully due.
Collection Procedures
Collection of Information: Technicians collect basic details (Name, Age) to affix accurate labels and confirm valid request forms. The reasoning is explained to patients. Verbal consent is obtained from parents/guardians for minors or geriatric/incompetent patients. Submitting willingly acts as implied consent for competent adults.
Collection of Specimens: The procedure is thoroughly explained beforehand. Complete instructions are delivered if specific protocols apply. Adequate privacy is maintained appropriate to the specimen classification.
Performance & Reporting
All laboratory evaluations strictly meet regulatory or professional standard criteria. Work is carried out under skilled supervision. The lab explicitly refuses to attempt evaluations under inappropriate conditions or produce unreliable testing that compromises patient health safety.
Results are strictly disclosed to the requesting clinician and the patient. Insurance copies are provided only after getting a pre-authorization form. Medico-legal or post-mortem profiles follow regulatory pathways via official police tracking requests. Secure, reliable transit methods are applied according to declared turnaround statements.
Impartiality & Confidentiality Agreement
Impartiality: The laboratory remains completely responsible for the absolute impartiality of its activities, ensuring commercial, financial, or internal/external workspace pressures never compromise diagnostic operations.
Confidentiality: Every staff member signs a strict code of ethics agreement. Records and personal patient criteria are stored securely to eliminate unauthorized data access, loss, or tempering behaviors. At the expiration of retention lifecycles, data files are destroyed confidentially.
